Abstract

The bounds on the phase difference between the waves reflected and transmitted by lossy structures having up–down symmetry are derived. The phase bounds are demonstrated to be sufficient to ensure physical energy properties when the lossy structure is a component of a more general optical system. The corresponding bounds which apply to lossy systems incorporating gratings or grids used in a Littrow mounting, and possessing left–right symmetry are given.
