Abstract

Estimates of salinity (total dissolved salts) based on fluid-inclusion ice-melting measurements err appreciably on the high side where dissolved CO2 is not taken into account. The problem is explored in theory and by comparing fluid-inclusion data with water data from associated active geothermal systems. The systematics of epithermal ore fluid chemistry is restructured to account for the lower and more accurate salinities, to identify the role of CO2 in pH changes leading to mineral deposition, and to note the variation of CO2 with depth.-G.J.N.
