Building a Unified Transportation Digital Twin

Abstract

The integration of advanced simulation and modelling tools is essential for creating a comprehensive transportation digital twin that accurately represents real-world traffic scenarios. This paper presents an integration of Rapidex, a cutting-edge traffic simulation and modelling tool, with NVIDIA Omniverse, a platform for 3D visualisation, modelling and virtual world simulation. By combining the capabilities of Rapidex with the expansive visualisation features of Omniverse, we aim to create a unified environment for generating, simulating, and visualising complex traffic data. We demonstrate how this integration enables seamless data transfer among the platforms allowing for real-time interaction and manipulation of traffic simulations within an immersive 3D environment. The powerful rendering capabilities of Omniverse are leveraged to generate detailed road scenes, accurate vehicle behaviour and dynamic traffic flows. This integrated solution showcases an interconnected ecosystem by combining Rapidex with NVIDIA Omniverse bringing new possibilities using the CESIUM real-world geospatial extension to accurately represent real world transportation systems. The proposed transportation digital twin enables stakeholders to collaborate on urban planning, analyse potential infrastructure changes and test various traffic management scenarios in a virtual environment.
