Hydroelectric power in Newfoundland, Tasmania and the South Island of New Zealand.
Abstract
Hydroelectricity is seen as a source of 'cheap power'. As such, hydroelectric schemes are used to attract industry to underdeveloped areas. This policy of 'hydro-industrialisation' has been pursued in Newfoundland, Tasmania and the South Island of New Zealand. The costs to all 3 islands - in economic, social and environmental terms - have been considerable. The results are more akin to underdevelopment than development, Hydro-industrialisation is no longer a tenable policy, if it ever was. -from Editors
