Abstract

Two anomalies have been observed in the emission of MeV ions from a gold target irradiated up to 2 × 1015 W cm-2 using a Nd:YAG:glass laser. These anomalies are shown to be consistent with self-focussing effects predicted by computer simulations. Details of the computer calculations are given.
