Abstract

Economics and politics are always closely interrelated. The purely economic issues that arise in the Middle East, however, are of an order of magnitude lower in importance than the political implications of economic factors, or since oil developments have tended to follow rather than precede political events, the economic implications of political development. Consequently, this paper concentrates on those economic issues which have important relationships with political issues in the Middle East and with significant implications for world politics or for the international economic system.
