Abstract

View of metal stools lined up along an angled linoleum-topped bar faced with linoleum, which has also been used as a wall surface. Mirror behind the shelves reflect two men in hats. The room has a linoleum floor, chromed edgings, curtained windows, decorative cornices and is lit by faceted ceiling lights and wall lanterns. Other details include two photographs of horse races, a figurine of a race horse and jockey on the shelf below a picture of R.M.S. Queen Mary, vases of flowers, a weighing machine and a wall clock. The Clarendon Hotel was purchased by Tooth & Company in September 1934 and sold in August 1985. On completion of rebuilding in January 1943 the hotel was a three storeyed brick structure with a fully tiled ground floor exterior and an asbestos and malthoid roof. The architectural style is known as P. & O. Ship Style because of its similarities to ocean liner forms.
