Potential application of the Zurich-Montpellier system of vegetation description and classification in Australia.
Abstract
Argues the value of the Zurich-Montpellier system of phytosociology, and summarizes results from 3 case studies (whipstick vegetation - spindly mallee scrub and open eucalypt forest - in Victoria, the karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) forest boundary, and SE Australian saltmarsh). Zurich-Montpellier techniques can be applied with equal ease to very small or very large areas, have a low-technology requirement, produce efficient mapping units at many scales, and provide the advantages of a polythetic system in which all species are used to provide the classification. -P.J.Jarvis
