Abstract

Time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy has been used to show that, in fluid solutions containing the luminophore Ru(bpy)32+, absorption of light leads to a delocalized set of emission states which relax quickly to a set of localized states in which the transferred electron resides on one ligand. In 4:1 ethanol/methanol at 130 K the time scale of relaxation is approximately 1 μs.
