Abstract

In March 1983 Professor Peter Doherty, together with Dr Michael Potter, National Institute of Health, Maryland, USA, and Dr Rolf Zinkernagel, a Swiss scientist with whom Professor Doherty had worked during his first attachement to the JCSMR in the early 1970s, jointly received Germany's highest award for medical research, the Paul Ehrlich and Ludwig Darmstadeter Prize, for work related to the immune system. In 1996 Peter Doherty and Rolf Zinkernagel were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discoveries concerning the specificity of the cell mediated immune defence.
