Abstract

The text sheet, illustrated with 9 figures, introduces geomagnetic concepts and then discusses: geomagnetism (time- averaged geomagnetic fields, reversals); magnetism of rocks (spontaneous magnetisation, stability of remance, magnetisation processes in rocks and types of remanence, field and laboratory techniques); applications of palaeomagnetism (tectonics, palaeolatitudes, palaeomagnetic dating, magnetostratigraphy); Australian apparent polar wander (Precambrian, Palaeozoic, Mesozoic, Cainozoic). The map sheet contains a table of the Mesozoic to Cainozoic magnetic polarity time-scale, and maps of apparent polar wander in the Precambrian, early-mid Palaeozoic, late Palaeozoic-Cainozoic.-M.A.Bass
