Abstract

Palagonite from the Limberg, Kaiserstuhl, Baden, W Germany, is composed of a dioctahedral smectite with significant Mg in the octahedral sheet. A chemical analysis of the smectite leads to the structural formula 315(Mg0.11Ca0.14Na0.06K0.13)(Ti0.27Al0.41Fe3+ 0.93Mg0.44)- (Si3.30Al0.70)O10(OH)2. The palagonite forms from the glass matrix of limburgite by hydration. Early in the alteration it develops spherical features. The alteration process proceeds at constant Ti and Fe, while all the remaining major elements of the glass are depleted. -I.Kb.
