Abstract

The role of fluid property data and their significance in design calculations is presented. Thermophysical property data are often not available or reliable. Properties of mixtures, critical point behavior, heat transfer with large shear rates or transient temperatures, and the design of a shell and tube heat exchanger are considered. An engineer would most likely choose to design based on conservative data. However, by making this selection there is a very real chance that the cost would be higher than necessary.
