Abstract

A number of Minalpha and Manganin resistance pressure gauges have been calibrated for use to 3 GPa against fixed points associated with the melting of mercury and the bismuth I ↔ II equilibrium. The bismuth I ↔ II point was located by a novel technique in which the pressure acting upon a mixed-phase (I and II) aggregate evolves with progressive transformation (and hence with time) towards the equilibrium pressure, by means of the volume change associated with the transition. The equilibrium was successfully reversed within ±1.5 MPa, with no significant region of indifference. A significant difference of about 4% between the linear coefficients for the two subgroups is probably attributable to the compositional difference between the Manganin and Minalpha alloys.
