Abstract

The effect of an applied magnetic field on a spectral hole burned in the R1 line of [Cr(bpy)3]3+/glycerol is measured. The hole spreading observed deviates considerably from a behaviour expected for a trigonal system. A model taking into account a distribution of low symmetry fields provides far better agreement with experiment. The same approach was previously applied to describe the large variation of the 2E splitting in various amorphous systems.
