Abstract

Hydraulic fracture stress measurements have been made in granite at 3 sites in Australia. Independent estimates of the in situ stress at each site obtained with the overcoring technique are in substantial agreement with the hydraulic fracture results. In the hydraulic fracture test results reported, two types of induced fracture geometries have been observed, fractures in the test section and fractures under the sealing packers. Each fracture geometry results in a distinctive pressure record. In both cases appropriate analysis of the results can provide reliable estimates of the in situ stress.
