Saloon bar in the Century Hotel, corner of George and Liverpool Streets, Sydney

Abstract

View of a curved linoleum-topped bar faced with veneer. The saloon features a checkerboard floor with inlaid designs, mirror-backed shelves, chromed edgings and fixtures, a curved stairwell with leadlight windows, and cornices and beams decorated with moulded plasterwork. It is lit by inverted bell-shaped lights hanging from the ceiling. Other details include a radio, vases of flowers and a small table with a receptacle top. Originally known as Askeys and then as Caseys until March 1940, the hotel was purchased by Tooth & Company in July 1923. On completion of rebuilding in January 1941 the hotel was a six storeyed brick structure, with a malthoid roof and a fully tiled ground floor exterior. The architectural style is known as P. & O.
