Abstract

There are three parts to this paper. The core of the paper is a description of a history of official statistics in Australia starting from colonial times. A fuller description is given in ABS (2005). The next part of the paper highlights the special and very important contributions of Sir Roland Wilson. Finally, the paper highlights some of the key future challenges facing the ABS.
