Saloon bar in the Clarendon Hotel, Hunter Street, Newcastle, New South Wales

Abstract

View of metal stools lined up along an angled linoleum-topped bar faced in linoleum. Mirror tiles behind the counter reflect a man with a pipe, a weighing machine and a wall lantern. Another set of mirrors in the background reflect a woman who is probably a barmaid, and a man. The room has a linoleum floor, chromed edgings, curtained windows, decorative cornices, fans and faceted lights that hang from the ceiling. On the wall there is a framed picture of the ship, R.M.S. Queen Mary, a clock and a victory crest. There are a number of flower arrangements in the saloon and a notice on the cash register announces a Lions Club luncheon meeting. The Clarendon Hotel was purchased by Tooth & Company in September 1934 and sold in August 1985. On completion of rebuilding in January 1943 the hotel was a three storeyed brick structure with a fully tiled ground floor exterior and an asbestos and malthoid roof.
