Abstract

Small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering have been combined with electrochemical measurements on polyacetylene-rich polyisoprene-polyacetylene block copolymers to understand the differences in oxidation-reduction properties and charge storage of the copolymer compared to the behaviour of the separate homopolymers. Microphase separation into micelle-like structures with the polyacetylene component surrounded by the less oxidisable polyisoprene occurs in solution, in electrodeposited films and in solvent-cast films, and has pronounced effects on the electrochemistry and the kinetics of charge storage. Electrodeposition of the copolymer offers a possible separation route for copolymer from the mixed homopolymer.
