Abstract

RbSr dates from four biotites from Limpopo Belt gneisses in the Transvaal and Rhodesia support the 2000 m.y. isotopic event first observed by Holmes and Cahen in UThPb dates from Beitbridge. Initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios imply that the strontium in the gneisses had a previous crustal history. Six lead isotope analyses give a wide range of model ages, some being clearly B- and J-type anomalies. Samples from the Campbell Mine, Messina, appear to contain a large proportion of radiogenic lead derived from a uranium-rich source at least 2400 m.y. old.
