Abstract

A comparison was made of the aggregation characteristics of suspensions of sodium and calcium montmorillonite when subjected to mechanical agitation in the form of shaking and dialysis. The electron microscope was used to distinguish between the thickness of particles formed under different treatments. Aggregation characteristics are interpreted in terms of flocculation into the primary and secondary minima of a potential energy distance diagram.
