Abstract

From measurements of the correlation between hyperfine field and isomer shift in Moessbauer spectra of Fe//1//0//0// minus //xB//x metallic glasses, further evidence is gained to suggest that the local structural units in these materials resemble that of orthorhombic Fe//3B. A sensitive probe into the process of crystallisation is obtained by following changes in the correlation value with crystallisation. The measurements indicate that tetragonal Fe//3B is the initial product of crystallisation.
