Abstract

Complex ions of the type [Fe(CO)4(HgY)2X]- where X or Y = Cl, Br, or I have been prepared as their quaternary ammonium, phosphonium, and arsonium salts. The salts are uni-univalent electrolytes in nitrobenzene and appear to be formed by both halide-addition and -exchange reactions from interaction of the appropriate halide (X-) with Fe(CO)4(HgY)2 (where Y = Cl or Br). The far-infrared spectra of the complexes have been recorded in the range 50-234 cm.-1 and are considered in relation to the proposed structures. Primary, secondary, and heterocyclic amines reversibly add to Fe(CO)4(HgCl)2 to form mono- or bis-adducts depending upon the amine employed. The amine-adducts are non-electrolytes in nitrobenzene and their infrared spectra are reported.
