Abstract

Rainfall records are longer, more numerous, and less broken than those for temperature, and frost is clearly associated with periods of low rainfall. Longer records from lowland stations are examined against shorter highland records in order to extrapolate the highland data into the past. A method is devised for identifying anomalously "dry' years in PNG and is compared to four different measures of the Southern Oscillation. Probable frost-event years are identified from patched-together records of extreme screen minimum temperatures and are compared to the "dry-year' index. -from Author
