Bottle department in the Royal Hotel, corner of Auburn Road and Queen Street, Auburn, Sydney
Abstract
Bottles of liquor on shelves and in the display case of a linoleum-topped counter, faced with the same mottled tiles used on the walls. The floor is also tiled and edgings are chrome-plated. Leaning against the shelves are two ladders and there is a cash register in a niche on the shelves. The Royal Hotel was purchased by Tooth & Company in May 1939 and sold in October 1983. On completion of rebuilding in December 1940 the hotel was a two storeyed brick structure, roofed partly with tiles and partly with flat concrete blocks and had a fully tiled ground floor exterior. The architectural style is known as P. & O. Ship Style because of its similarities to ocean liner forms.
