Horse teams haul wagons loaded with refined sugar products along Jones Street, Pyrmont, NSW

Abstract

The horses and wagons belong to cartage contractor, Sugar Cartage Ltd (owned, jointly, by The Colonial Sugar Refining Company Limited and the McCaffery family). Sugar Cartage Ltd became McCaffery Services Pty Ltd, a fully-owned subsidiary of CSR Ltd. The photograph shows the horse teams proceeding up the hill in Jones Street, Pyrmont and about to turn into John Street. The gentleman standing on the pavement on the left is Mr CJ McCaffery, the company's founder and original contractor. Also on the left are some of the buildings and the chimney of the Distillery.
