Abstract

An improved Z pinch and a wall-stabilised arc have been used to check discrepant observations of Ar+-H satellite features in the wings of Lyman- alpha as previously reported by Preston (wall-stabilised arc) (1977) and Baker and Burgess (Z pinch) (1979). The principal result reported is the confirmation of only the red-wing Ar+-H satellite at a position of 3.8 nm from Lyman- alpha line centre (as already measured by Preston). No effort has been made to check the observed (Preston) satellite at 19 nm because the measurements of such extended line wings are fairly uncertain. However, none of the satellite features reported by Baker (1977) could be confirmed by the present measurements.
