Abstract

The enrichment of iron in silicate melt compared to coexisting silicate crystals forms a cornerstone of igneous petrology. Experiments reported here confirm the proposal that liquid is Mg-richer than coexisting garnet below approx 900oC at crustal pressures and below approx 1000oC at 30 kbar pressure. The 'normal' relative iron enrichment in melt compared to garnet occurs above these temperatures.-from Author Dept. of Geol., Australian Nat. Univ., Canberra, ACT, Australia.
