Abstract

The six British settler colonies in Australia federated as the Commonwealth of Australia on the first day of 1901. Australia was the creation of an Act of the British Parliament in London, and did not exercise independence in its foreign policy until the Second World War. Whereas today many Australians trace their origins to Italy, Greece, eastern Europe and increasingly SouthEast Asia, the Australia of the first few decades of the twentieth century was stolidly British, and Australian schools inculcated British values about race as about everything else.
