Abstract

In 1863 a gang of bushrangers, including Ben Hall and John Gilbert, bailed up the entire town of Canowindra, shepherding everybody into Robinson's Hotel and instructing them to eat or drink all they wished - at the gang's expense. The 'party' lasted for three days until 14 dray drivers warned Hall that the river was rising and that they needed to leave before they were stranded.
