Abstract
Measurements are reported of the force between two molecularly smooth mica surfaces coated with adsorbed bilayers of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and separated by an aqueous solution of CTAB. Below the critical micelle concentration (cmc), the double-layer forces are well described by assuming the surfactant to be a completely dissociated simple 1:1 electrolyte. Above the cmc, micelles and their "bound" counterions do not contribute to the Debye length. Some consequences for colloid stability are discussed.
