Public bar in the Unicorn Hotel, corner of Oxford and Hopewell Streets, Paddington, Sydney
Abstract
View of curved tile-faced linoleum-topped bar bordered with mottled tiles. The room has a linoleum and tile floor, partially tiled walls and a decorative plaster cornice. The image of a unicorn is etched onto two mirror panels above the bar. On the far counter is an ornate cash register. The Unicorn Hotel was purchased by Tooth & Company in February 1936. On completion of rebuilding in August 1941 the hotel was a two storeyed brick structure with a fully tiled ground floor exterior and a roof that was partly malthoid covered and partly surfaced with corrugated asbestos. The architectural style is known as P. & O. Ship Style because of its similarities to ocean liner forms.
