Abstract

Corrosion testing was performed in conjunction with microhardness and microstructural characterisation for custom produced Mg-Zn and Mg-Sr binary alloys and Mg-Zn-Sr ternary alloys. The study was designed to isolate the effect of Sr on the corrosion on Mg, whilst classifying its interaction with Zn in the class of Al-free Mg alloys. The results show that Sr can refine the grain size of Mg in a binary context, but increases the corrosion rate. Zn can reduce both the grain size and corrosion rate in binary alloys. However in the ternary alloy, Sr within the solubility range can contribute to reduced corrosion rate.
