Abstract

The positions and intensities of the electronic origins in [Zn(bpy)3](ClO4)2:Ru(II) are strongly dependent on the orientation of an applied magnetic field within the metal-ligand plane. Spectra can be calculated by a model in which the lowest-energy charge-transfer excitations involve an individual metal-ligand subunit. The model can also reproduce all the significant features of the spectra reported for [Ru(bpy)3](PF6)2.
